Germany enforces national alcohol ban at train stations

Thu 15th Oct, 2026

A nationwide ban on the consumption of alcohol at train stations across Germany came into effect today, as Deutsche Bahn expands a rule previously tested at select locations. The measure, aimed at reducing conflicts and creating a more pleasant environment, applies to all types of alcohol being consumed within the station premises, except in dining establishments.

The initiative, trialed in almost 40 train stations including major hubs like Cologne, Munich and Hamburg, now covers approximately 5,700 stations across the country. Anja Bröker, spokesperson for Deutsche Bahn, stated that the prohibition's pilot phase was considered successful, noting a reduction in conflicts and litter, as well as improvements in the overall station atmosphere. "Our passengers and our staff reported feeling more comfortable and that the stay is more pleasant," she emphasized.

Frequent announcements have been made at stations like Cologne Central Station, reminding passengers of the ban: "Alcohol ban. The prohibited area covers the entire station." For Cologne, this rule has been in place since the beginning of April.

Responses to the ban have varied among travelers. According to Deutsche Bahn, a survey indicated that 80% of travelers support the alcohol ban at stations. Stefan Kresse, a traveler from the Euskirchen region, expressed agreement with the move, suggesting it significantly improves the travel environment. "There’s a noticeable difference, especially regarding excessive alcohol consumption," he remarked.

Nonetheless, some concerns have been voiced regarding the implementation's fairness. Edgar Tamaliunas, another traveler, acknowledged the practicality of the ban but expressed apprehension that it might unfairly impact responsible drinkers. "It's understandable but not entirely positive, as it also restricts those who handle alcohol responsibly," he noted.

Meanwhile, Petra Burkhardt, traveling from Cologne to Berlin, highlighted expectations for a more orderly and enjoyable atmosphere, especially during nighttime. "It’s likely to make a difference, with fewer intoxicated people around," she said, although she also pointed out challenges in enforcement, anticipating difficulties in dispersing non-compliant individuals.

The Bahnhofsmission, an organization assisting travelers, supports the ban but warns of potential consequences. The group fears that the problems typically associated with alcohol consumption might simply relocate to areas adjacent to the stations. Mirko Schwärzel, head of the federal association for the Bahnhofsmission, has called for collaborative strategies between Deutsche Bahn and local authorities to address this issue.

Each station will have its specific regulations regarding the enforcement of the alcohol ban, leaving some operational questions open. The overall aim is to enhance the security and cleanliness of the stations, making them more inviting and family-friendly spaces.
