Germany has successfully met its climate targets for the year 2024, as reported by the Federal Environment Agency. In the past year, the country emitted 649 million tons of greenhouse gases, marking a reduction of 3.4 percent from 2023. This figure is significantly below the allowable total emissions of 693.4 million tons set by the Climate Protection Act. The decrease in emissions is primarily attributed to a decline in the use of fossil fuels, particularly coal.
However, the transportation and building sectors continue to lag behind their respective targets. Despite a slight reduction in emissions, these areas failed to meet their specific goals. The Federal Minister of Economic Affairs expressed optimism, stating that Germany is on a positive trajectory in its climate efforts and that achieving lower greenhouse gas emissions is feasible even amidst economic growth.
Germany aims to reduce its emissions by 65 percent by 2030 compared to 1990 levels and achieve climate neutrality by 2045. Projections indicate that the country could exceed its 65-percent target by 81 million tons of CO2 equivalents, yet it faces a potential shortfall of 226 million tons regarding EU climate regulations. Experts have raised concerns that current climate policies may not enable Germany to achieve its goal of net greenhouse gas neutrality by 2045.
The transportation sector remains a significant challenge, contributing approximately 143.1 million tons to the total emissions in 2024, even after a 1.4 percent reduction. This figure is still 18 million tons above the target set for this sector. Experts have pointed to the sluggish demand for battery-electric vehicles as a worrying trend, emphasizing the need for a stronger push for electric vehicle adoption.
Similarly, the building sector has not met its emissions targets, with around 100.5 million tons of greenhouse gases emitted, despite a 2.3 percent decrease attributed mainly to milder weather reducing heating demand. In contrast, emissions in the industrial sector remained relatively stable, with a slight increase of 0.1 percent, although projections suggest that the industry is on track to meet its 2030 climate goals.
Environmental organizations have criticized the government's climate action, attributing the achievement of the annual target to favorable weather conditions and a slowing global economy rather than effective climate policies. They call for a renewed commitment to climate action, emphasizing the legal obligation to meet climate targets. A forthcoming report from the Expert Council on Climate Issues will further evaluate the projections released by the Federal Environment Agency.
