The recent quarterfinal match of the Women's European Championship showcased impressive viewership numbers, with an average of 10.7 million people tuning in to watch the German national team. This figure highlights the growing popularity of women's football in Germany, particularly as the team, under the guidance of head coach Christian Wück, prepares for its next challenge.
The previous matches in the tournament also attracted significant audiences. The opening victory against Poland garnered 8.22 million viewers, reflecting a market share of 41.2 percent. The subsequent win against Denmark saw 7.02 million viewers, while the final group match against Sweden attracted 7.66 million, with a market share of 37.9 percent. Each of these games was accessible on the streaming platform Dazn, further enhancing viewer engagement.
Looking ahead, the German team is set to face the reigning world champions, Spain, in the semifinals on Wednesday, with the match scheduled for 9 PM and available for viewing on ARD and Dazn. The interest in this matchup is expected to be substantial, especially given the high viewership numbers recorded during the men's European Championship last year, where knockout stage matches achieved over 20 million viewers, peaking at an average of 26.13 million for the quarterfinal against Spain.
In contrast, the viewership figures for the Club World Cup, which involved German teams, were notably lower. The Bayern Munich match against Paris Saint-Germain attracted only 2.5 million viewers on Sat.1, representing a market share of 19.2 percent. Similarly, Borussia Dortmund's match against Real Madrid had an average audience of 1.6 million, with a market share of 10.8 percent. However, these matches were also streamed on Dazn, which reported additional viewership ranging from 800,000 to 1.34 million streams, indicating a mixed reception.
Interestingly, the final loss of the German U21 national team at the European Championship did, however, yield a stronger viewership for Sat.1. During the first half of their match against England, an average of 5.42 million viewers tuned in, equating to a market share of 27.9 percent. This number rose to 6.36 million viewers during the second half and extra time, resulting in a market share of 36.6 percent.
