German Aid Organizations Deliver Critical Medical Supplies to Sudan Hospital

Wed 3rd Dec, 2025

Two leading German health organizations, action medeor and the Pharmacists' Chamber of North Rhine (AKNR), are collaborating to provide essential medical aid to the 'Mother of Mercy Hospital' located in the Nuba Mountains, southern Sudan. This region has become a refuge for hundreds of thousands of individuals fleeing ongoing civil conflict in the northern parts of the country.

The Nuba Mountains have seen a significant influx of internally displaced persons, many of whom undertake perilous journeys on foot to reach the hospital. These individuals often face threats from ongoing hostilities, landmines, and food scarcity. Upon arrival, a substantial number of patients are physically weakened and in urgent need of medical attention. The hospital currently treats over 700 people daily, with children making up a considerable portion of those receiving care. Widespread diseases such as tuberculosis, leprosy, and cholera present significant public health challenges in the area. However, the availability of medicines and critical medical supplies is frequently insufficient to meet the high demand.

In response to these challenges, action medeor is preparing a comprehensive shipment of medical supplies for the hospital's healthcare team, led by chief physician Dr. Tom Catena. The planned consignment includes antibiotics, pain relief medications, anti-malarial drugs, bandages, syringes, stethoscopes, and electrolyte solutions. The organization is also working to source specialized medications for tuberculosis, which is identified as an urgent need.

To enhance the impact of this aid initiative, the Pharmacists' Chamber of North Rhine is mobilizing pharmacies in the Düsseldorf and Cologne regions to support the campaign. Through a coordinated outreach, pharmacies across North Rhine-Westphalia are being encouraged to contribute to the collection of medical goods and to support the dedicated hospital team operating under challenging conditions in Sudan.

The partnership between action medeor and AKNR has been active for over a decade. Past collaborations have enabled public pharmacies in Tanzania to receive urgently needed medications. Additionally, joint fundraising efforts have supported healthcare projects in countries such as Yemen, Syria, and Afghanistan, reflecting a sustained commitment to international health assistance.

The current initiative emphasizes the ongoing need for international solidarity in the face of humanitarian crises. The delivery of medical aid to the Mother of Mercy Hospital aims not only to address immediate shortages but also to support the resilience and capacity of local healthcare providers working in conflict zones. Both organizations underscore the importance of continued donations and support from pharmacies and the broader community to ensure that life-saving treatments reach those most at risk.

This collaborative effort highlights the critical role of international partnerships in bridging gaps in healthcare delivery, particularly in regions affected by conflict and instability. By uniting resources and expertise, action medeor and the Pharmacists' Chamber of North Rhine are making a significant contribution to improving health outcomes for vulnerable populations in Sudan.
