Munich Court Sentences Three Dual Nationals for Espionage on Behalf of Russia

The Higher Regional Court in Munich has handed down prison sentences to three men holding both German and Russian citizenships after convicting them of engaging in espionage activities for Russian intelligence. The trial centered on allegations that these individuals had plotted sabotage operations against critical infrastructure within Germany.

According to court findings, the primary defendant, a 41-year-old man, received a six-year prison sentence. The court determined that he had played a leading role in orchestrating planned acts of sabotage, including arson attacks and disruptions targeting railway lines and military facilities. Additionally, evidence presented during the proceedings indicated that the defendant had previously participated as a paramilitary in the conflict in eastern Ukraine from 2014 to 2016, associating with an armed group opposed to Ukrainian government forces.

The two co-defendants were found to have assisted the main perpetrator in his activities during late 2023 and early 2024. Both received suspended sentences: one was sentenced to half a year and the other to a year on probation. The prosecution had sought longer sentences, requesting eight years and eight months for the primary defendant, while the defense argued for acquittal on all charges.

The court concluded that all three men had knowingly engaged in intelligence gathering for the Russian government, with their actions designed to threaten Germany's security and undermine its infrastructure. The evidence included communications and surveillance indicating coordination with Russian intelligence services and plans for attacks targeting the German railway network and military assets.

During the trial, the main defendant denied the accusations, asserting that his presence in eastern Ukraine was solely due to a personal relationship and that he had not been involved in combat or militant activities. He also refuted claims of planning sabotage operations in Germany, describing interactions with his associates as non-serious and casual. However, the prosecution maintained that the men acted deliberately and with clear intent to aid Russian interests, citing their contacts and coordinated efforts as compelling proof.
