A German backpacker, Carolina Wilga, has expressed her gratitude from a hospital in Perth after being rescued following a harrowing twelve-day ordeal in the Australian Outback. The 26-year-old went missing, prompting a large search operation that captivated people worldwide. She was discovered by a passerby in the remote bushland of Western Australia.
Wilga, who has been traveling through Australia for two years, shared her experience, explaining that she left her vehicle after losing control and rolling down a slope. Although she had provisions in her car, the accident left her disoriented and unable to find her way back. During her time in the wilderness, Wilga survived on rainwater and puddle water while facing harsh weather conditions, including rain and extreme temperatures.
In her statement, Wilga expressed deep appreciation for the support she received during her search and rescue. She highlighted the tireless efforts of the police, search teams, and her rescuers, particularly thanking Tania Henley, an Australian woman who found her and provided immediate assistance. Wilga described how the thought of those who cared for her and kept hope alive was a source of strength during her most difficult moments.
The search for Wilga began when her vehicle was found abandoned in the vast Karroun Hill Nature Reserve. Her family, who reside in Castrop-Rauxel, Germany, actively sought help through social media, urging the public to assist in the search. Wilga's phone was switched off, which heightened concerns for her safety.
When she was finally located, she was dehydrated and exhausted but, fortunately, had only sustained minor injuries. Authorities noted that she had experienced sunburn, insect bites, bruises, and a foot injury but had survived relatively well given the circumstances.
This incident underscores the risks associated with outdoor adventures and the importance of safety measures while traveling in remote areas. Wilga's story has resonated with many, serving as a reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the kindness of strangers.
