German Ambassador Criticizes Israel's Halt on Gaza Aid Deliveries

Fri 7th Mar, 2025

The German Ambassador to Israel has expressed strong opposition to Israel's recent decision to suspend humanitarian aid deliveries to Gaza. In a statement, he emphasized that closing the border to international humanitarian assistance contradicts Israel's obligations under international law.

He remarked that it is unjust for the suffering population of Gaza to bear the consequences of the actions of Hamas. The ambassador cautioned against equating the residents of Gaza with the militant organization, stating that while the Hamas's actions warrant no understanding, the humanitarian needs of the people must be addressed.

The ambassador pointed out that although the Hamas has been diverting a portion of the aid meant for civilians, this does not negate the necessity for continued support to those in dire need. He called for measures to ensure that humanitarian assistance reaches the vulnerable populations without being exploited by militant groups.

Following the expiration of a ceasefire agreement with Hamas, Israel opted to fully halt aid deliveries as a means to exert pressure on the militant group. The Israeli government is advocating for Hamas to agree to an extension of the ceasefire, which Hamas has rejected, preferring to move into a second phase of negotiations that would include an end to hostilities.

Additionally, the ambassador credited the efforts of the U.S. Special Envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, for facilitating the agreement between Israel and Hamas. He noted that the groundwork laid by the previous U.S. administration under President Biden paved the way for this critical negotiation, underscoring the importance of maintaining the ceasefire and ensuring the safe release of hostages in Gaza.
