Genetic Markers May Help Predict Aggressiveness of Stomach Cancer

A recent study has identified a set of four genes that could serve as indicators for the potential lethality of stomach cancer. Researchers have found that analyzing specific mutations in four genes--BRCA2, CDH1, RHOA, and TP53--can provide crucial insights into how stomach cancers develop and progress. Current treatment protocols for stomach cancer typically involve standard methods such as surgery and chemotherapy, regardless of the individual characteristics of the tumor. Dr. Ulysses Ribeiro, a leading researcher from the São Paulo State Cancer Institute in Brazil, has emphasized the need for a more tailored approach to treatment. By recognizing the distinct molecular differences in tumors, doctors may be able to offer therapies that are better suited to each patient's unique condition.

The study involved an analysis of 21 genes in tumor samples from 87 patients who had undergone surgery and chemotherapy for stomach cancer. The researchers observed that approximately one-third of these patients exhibited mutations in the specific combination of the four identified genes. These mutations were associated with a higher likelihood of mortality or cancer recurrence.

Among the identified genes, BRCA2 is already known for its role in breast and ovarian cancers, while the other three genes have been less explored in the context of stomach cancer. The findings indicate that these genetic alterations may act as significant drivers of cancer progression.

Researchers are now focusing on developing cost-effective laboratory tests that can facilitate the screening of tumors for this high-risk genetic pattern. The goal is to enhance the ability of healthcare providers to make informed decisions regarding treatment options.
