Plans to Rename Park in Garmisch-Partenkirchen After Laura Dahlmeier

Mon 4th Aug, 2025

The municipality of Garmisch-Partenkirchen is preparing to honor the late biathlete Laura Dahlmeier by proposing the renaming of a local park in her memory. This initiative comes in the wake of her tragic passing, which prompted the community to reflect on ways to commemorate her legacy.

Elisabeth Koch, the mayor of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, confirmed that she intends to present a proposal to the town council in September, recommending that the Kurpark be renamed to Laura-Dahlmeier-Park. This decision has reportedly been coordinated with Dahlmeier's family, indicating a thoughtful approach to the memorialization.

In addition to the proposed renaming, a temporary memorial has already been established within the park. This site includes a wooden stele displaying a photo of Dahlmeier, along with a candle and a stone sourced from the local mountains. The creation of this memorial was done in close collaboration with the family, reflecting the community's desire to provide a space for mourning and remembrance.

Initially, the local government had adopted a cautious stance regarding public memorials, stating that they would only act at the family's request. However, as the community's grief and support for Dahlmeier became evident, additional avenues for expressing condolences were introduced. One such initiative includes a condolence book, where residents can share their thoughts and memories of the athlete.

The local administration has encouraged community members to contribute to this book, which will ultimately be presented to Dahlmeier's family. This gesture underscores the impact that Dahlmeier had on her hometown and the affection in which she was held by the community.

The proposal to rename the park, alongside the various memorial efforts, signifies a collective commitment to preserving Dahlmeier's memory and celebrating her contributions to the sport of biathlon and her community.
