G-BA Implements Updated Vaccination Recommendations

Mon 8th Sep, 2025

The Gemeinsame Bundesausschuss (G-BA) has enacted several changes to its vaccination guidelines following the latest recommendations from the Standing Committee on Vaccination (STIKO) made in July. These updates are aimed at expanding the protection against seasonal influenza and other diseases.

One significant change pertains to the seasonal flu vaccination. The G-BA has broadened the group of individuals eligible for the flu vaccine in response to an alarming rise in highly pathogenic H5Nx viruses detected among poultry, waterfowl, and various mammal species worldwide. Under the new guidelines, not only individuals with pre-existing health conditions and healthcare workers but also those who frequently interact with pigs, poultry, wild birds, or seals in both private and professional contexts will be eligible for the vaccination. This includes workers in livestock farming, zoos, animal shelters, veterinary practices, and slaughterhouses, as well as apprentices, students, interns, and volunteers. The STIKO now recommends an annual flu vaccination during the fall or winter for these groups to enhance their immunity against influenza. The modifications will take effect the day after their publication in the Federal Gazette.

Additionally, the G-BA has adopted STIKO's recommendation regarding the vaccination for Mpox (formerly known as monkeypox). The new directive allows for vaccination of individuals aged 12 and older, reflecting the approval of the Mpox vaccine, Imvanex, for this age group since 2024. Previously, the vaccination was limited to individuals aged 18 and older. The updated recommendation now includes a wider range of at-risk groups, such as transgender and non-binary individuals who have sexual relationships with men and frequently change partners, as well as sex workers, thereby broadening the scope of protection.
