Fujifilm has introduced the X-E5, an advanced mirrorless system camera that boasts a remarkable 40-megapixel APS-C sensor, enhancing its capabilities beyond its predecessor, the X-E4, which featured a 26-megapixel sensor. This new model incorporates a machined and anodized aluminum top plate, a first for the X series, providing a premium tactile experience compared to the previously used magnesium alloy casing. Weighing in at 445 grams, including the battery and memory card, the X-E5 retains a compact and lightweight profile, although it is slightly heavier than the X-E4, which weighed 364 grams.
The X-E5 continues to embrace a classic rangefinder design while integrating modern technology. A newly designed horizontal groove on the top of the camera body positions the control dials slightly recessed, protecting them from accidental adjustments while facilitating easier handling. Additionally, a new film simulation dial located on the left shoulder of the camera allows users to quickly switch between various film simulations, now totaling 20 options. Users can also save personal film simulation recipes on positions FS1 to FS3, with an optimized menu for easy access.
Enhanced Stabilization and Autofocus FeaturesFujifilm has equipped the X-E5 with a new 5-axis image stabilization system that compensates for camera shake by up to 7 EV stops at the center of the image and 6 EV stops at the edges. This improvement is achieved through an optimized gyroscope and advanced algorithms that analyze camera movements more precisely and swiftly than previous models.
The autofocus system in the X-E5 has been enhanced with artificial intelligence and deep learning technologies, allowing for improved tracking of human and animal faces, as well as vehicles, birds, and even drones. This update aims to enhance the tracking performance for moving subjects and improve precision in low-contrast scenes.
Exceptional Image Quality and Video CapabilitiesThe X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor, previously introduced in the X-T5, delivers exceptional image quality with its 40.2 megapixels and enhanced pixel structure for superior light capture. ISO 125 is now available as a standard sensitivity setting, facilitating detailed shots with reduced noise--an improvement over the need for extended ISO settings in the X-E4. The electronic shutter offers exposure times of up to 1/180,000 seconds, and users can capture continuous shots at a rate of up to 13 frames per second without cropping, or up to 8 frames per second with the mechanical shutter. Furthermore, a pre-recording feature is available with the electronic shutter.
In terms of video capabilities, the X-E5 can record in 6.2K resolution at 30 frames per second in a 16:9 aspect ratio. For slow-motion effects, Full HD recording allows for frame rates of up to 240 frames per second. The autofocus system is designed to maintain smooth focus tracking during video recordings.
User-Friendly FeaturesThe camera includes a new Classic Display mode, which is only activated in the electronic viewfinder, displaying only essential information at the bottom of the screen. Another feature, Surround View, provides a preview of the area outside the frame, akin to an optical viewfinder.
A front-mounted control lever allows users to select film simulation recipes and switch display modes, adjust the image format, or modify the digital teleconverter's zoom. This lever offers five different control options, similar to the one found in the Fujifilm GFX100RF. The 3-inch touchscreen is fully articulated, allowing for greater flexibility in framing shots, especially for selfies or group photos.
New Pancake LensAccompanying the X-E5 is a new pancake lens, the Fujinon XF23mm F2.8 R WR, designed specifically for Fujifilm's smaller X-series cameras. The 23mm focal length translates to a 35mm equivalent, making it versatile for various photography scenarios, including street photography, landscapes, and portraits. Measuring just 23mm in length and 62mm in diameter, and weighing slightly over 90 grams, it is compact enough for easy transport. The optical construction consists of eight elements in six groups, including two aspherical lenses to minimize aberrations and ensure sharpness from the center to the edges.
Both the focus and aperture rings are separated by a fixed spacer, allowing for independent adjustment. The sensor-driven focus ring enables precise manual focusing with minimal rotation. Furthermore, nine seals protect the lens from dust and moisture.
Availability and PricingThe Fujifilm X-E5 is set to be available in August 2025, with a retail price of EUR1,550. The Fujinon XF23mm F2.8 R WR will be sold separately starting in December 2025 for EUR450, while a kit option will be offered at EUR1,800. The camera will be available in both black and silver finishes.
