Fridays for Future Calls for Enhanced Climate Action Ahead of Bundestag Elections

In anticipation of the upcoming Bundestag elections, the climate activist group Fridays for Future has publicly expressed its criticisms regarding the climate policies proposed by various political parties. During a press conference held in Berlin, Carla Reemtsma, a spokesperson for the organization, highlighted significant shortcomings in the election programs, particularly those of the Social Democratic Party (SPD).

Reemtsma pointed out that the SPD's agenda fails to mention a transition away from coal, oil, and gas, suggesting that Chancellor Olaf Scholz has predominantly focused on advancing fossil fuel projects over the past few years. In her assessment, this oversight reflects a broader trend of inadequate climate commitments from major political players.

Moreover, Reemtsma criticized the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) for evading responsibility regarding climate policy, particularly in light of its rejection of a ban on combustion engines. Although the Green Party has articulated clearer climate objectives, Reemtsma argued that its credibility is undermined by conflicting statements from its own candidate for chancellor, especially concerning the planned coal phase-out by 2030.

Fridays for Future has laid out several specific demands aimed at strengthening climate action, including a proposed exit from gas usage by 2035. The organization also advocates for the establishment of a fund to mitigate the impacts of climate change, which would be financed through taxation on fossil fuel companies.

Luisa Neubauer, another prominent member of the organization, emphasized the need for political parties to better address the concerns of young voters. She remarked on the recurring disconnect between the political establishment and younger generations, asserting that the lack of engagement leaves many feeling overlooked and unheard. This sentiment is particularly resonant in light of the upcoming elections, where youth participation is expected to be significant.

In preparation for the elections, Fridays for Future plans to mobilize nationwide demonstrations on February 14, aiming to amplify their message about the urgent necessity for robust climate policies. The organization seeks to remind both voters and politicians of the pressing need for genuine environmental action as part of the electoral dialogue.
