Police Officers in Frankfurt Suspended After Allegations of Excessive Force During Arrests

Authorities in Frankfurt have implemented immediate measures following serious allegations of police misconduct at the city's 1st Police Precinct. Multiple officers, including leadership personnel, are under investigation for alleged use of excessive force against detainees. As a result, six officers have been suspended from duty, and the precinct's management is set to be replaced.

According to statements from the Frankfurt public prosecutor's office and the Hessian State Criminal Police Office, searches were conducted at the 1st Precinct on Zeil Street and at the private residences of 17 officers aged between 24 and 56. The investigation reportedly involves incidents affecting two Algerian nationals, two German citizens, and two stateless individuals originally from Syria.

Evidence for the alleged incidents includes video recordings from body cameras and surveillance systems, as well as eyewitness testimonies. The accusations involve physical altercations, including reported punches, kicks, and forcibly pushing individuals' heads against walls and doors. In one case, a detainee was allegedly pushed down a flight of stairs. These incidents are said to have occurred during preliminary detentions, routine checks, and within the police station itself.

The public prosecutor's office indicated that the resulting injuries included abrasions, facial bruises, and a broken nose. The severity of the allegations prompted immediate disciplinary actions against all 17 officers named in the case. Six officers, facing the most serious accusations, have been banned from performing their official duties. The leadership of the 1st Precinct will also be completely restructured to restore the precinct's operational integrity and public trust.

Although the investigation currently does not implicate the previous precinct management directly, authorities state that the leadership change is necessary to ensure the precinct's continued functionality, given its reputation for previous controversies. The remaining officers under investigation have been temporarily reassigned to administrative duties.

The Hessian Minister of the Interior reaffirmed confidence in the integrity of the state's police force, emphasizing that the actions of a few individuals should not overshadow the professionalism of more than 16,000 officers in the region. The ongoing judicial process will determine the extent of individual responsibility and whether any officers failed to intervene in instances of misconduct.

As part of the investigation, law enforcement officials executed searches of officers' vehicles and confiscated mobile phones and digital storage devices. Charges under consideration include bodily harm in office, obstruction of justice, and the wrongful prosecution of innocent individuals. The incidents under scrutiny reportedly took place earlier this year and are substantiated by both video evidence and witness accounts.

If convicted, the accused officers could face prison sentences of up to five years. The investigation remains active, with further disciplinary and legal actions pending the outcome of judicial proceedings.
