Berlin witnessed a serious accident involving a police vehicle that has left one officer in critical condition and three others severely injured. The incident occurred on Monday at approximately 5:29 PM at the intersection of Wittelsbacherstraße and Konstanzer Straße. According to police spokesperson Florian Nath, the collision involved a police car responding to an emergency and a small car.
The police vehicle, which was operating under emergency protocols, collided forcefully with the driver's side of a Kia at the intersection. Reports indicate that the driver of the Kia, along with two police officers, sustained serious injuries, while another officer is facing life-threatening conditions.
Emergency medical services promptly arrived at the scene, and a helicopter was dispatched to transport the critically injured officer to a nearby hospital. This officer was seated in the back of the police vehicle at the time of the crash. As of early Tuesday morning, there was no update on the officer's condition from the police spokesperson.
The circumstances surrounding the accident remain unclear. Investigators from the traffic accident unit are currently working to reconstruct the events that led to the crash. Preliminary information suggests that the police car may have turned left from Wittelsbacherstraße into the path of the Kia, which was traveling straight on Konstanzer Straße. The driver of the Kia attempted to avoid the collision by swerving right but was unable to do so in time.
The Police Union (GdP) of Berlin has highlighted the inherent risks associated with emergency responses, noting that despite the high level of attention and caution exercised by officers, accidents of this nature can still occur. Union spokesperson Benjamin Jendro expressed wishes for a swift recovery for the injured individuals involved, including the officer and the Kia driver, hoping they will eventually return to full health.
Due to the ongoing investigation and recovery efforts for the damaged vehicles, a section of Konstanzer Straße between Brandenburgischer Straße and Zähringerstraße remained closed for an extended period following the incident.
