A former nurse, previously convicted for multiple murders, is now under investigation for a significantly higher number of fatalities in a hospital setting. Authorities in Aachen have reported that the individual, already serving a life sentence for ten murders and 27 attempted murders, may be linked to more than 100 additional suspicious deaths.
The nurse, who worked at a palliative care unit in Würselen near Aachen since 2020, was sentenced by the regional court in November 2025. The court determined that the individual had administered lethal injections to patients over a period extending from December 2023 to May 2024. Now, new inquiries are being made into deaths that occurred prior to the incidents for which the nurse was originally convicted.
According to the chief public prosecutor in Aachen, the ongoing investigation has identified a substantial number of cases warranting closer scrutiny. These cases are considered suspicious due to emerging evidence and patterns identified during the primary investigation. The prosecutor emphasized that the current findings represent an initial stage of suspicion and that each case will require thorough examination. Some of the cases may ultimately be determined not to involve criminal actions.
To facilitate the ongoing investigation, authorities have conducted 27 exhumations in connection with the newly identified potential cases. Around 30 additional exhumations are planned as part of the effort to gather further evidence. These measures are considered necessary to determine if there is a direct link between the nurse's actions and the deaths in question.
The original conviction stemmed from a series of incidents on the hospital's palliative care unit, where the nurse was found to have administered fatal injections to vulnerable patients. The court found the actions to be deliberate and premeditated, resulting in a life sentence. The latest developments suggest that the scope of the individual's alleged crimes could be far broader than previously established.
Investigators are now working to clarify the circumstances of each death and whether they can be attributed to the nurse's conduct. The review includes medical records, autopsy results, and any other pertinent evidence. The process is expected to be extensive, given the number of cases and the complexity of forensic examinations required.
Hospital officials have stated their intention to fully cooperate with authorities and support the investigation. The case has prompted renewed discussions on hospital oversight and patient safety protocols, particularly in palliative and intensive care settings. Regulatory bodies are also reviewing procedures for monitoring staff and detecting unusual patterns of patient mortality.
The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have indicated that updates will be provided as more information becomes available. The case has drawn national attention due to the unprecedented number of suspected victims and the severity of the allegations. Authorities stress that all findings will be handled with the utmost diligence and sensitivity, given the impact on the families involved and the broader public concern regarding hospital safety.
