Forest Fire Erupts Near Niemegk in Brandenburg

Thu 15th May, 2025

A forest fire has broken out in the vicinity of Niemegk, located in the Potsdam-Mittelmark district of Brandenburg, prompting immediate action from local firefighting crews. The blaze, which ignited around midday, has already spread across at least 2.5 hectares of woodland, as reported by the Brandenburg operations center.

Residents in nearby areas have been advised to keep their windows and doors closed to minimize smoke inhalation while firefighters work to contain the flames. The fire's origin point was identified to be east of a local industrial zone.

This incident comes on the heels of a relatively quiet year for forest fires in the region. The year 2024 saw a significant decline in such events, with only 196 fires reported, a stark contrast to the previous years. In late August 2024, however, a major fire consumed 172 hectares on the former Jüterbog-West military training area, necessitating aerial support from both the federal police and military helicopters.

For context, 2023 recorded 251 fires over an area of approximately 765 hectares, while the year 2022 was notably severe, with 523 fires affecting a total of 1,426 hectares of land.

As firefighting efforts continue, authorities remain vigilant, monitoring the situation closely to prevent further spread and ensure community safety.
