Düsseldorf faced a tragic incident during its annual fair, the Rheinkirmes, when a firework misfired, injuring 19 individuals, including two children, one of whom sustained serious facial injuries. The event, intended to be the highlight of the celebration, turned into chaos when a firework exploded at a dangerously low altitude around 10:30 PM.

Witnesses reported a stunning start to the fireworks display, with vibrant colors lighting up the sky and applause from the crowd. However, the atmosphere quickly shifted as an explosion occurred in the vicinity of the crowd. Sparks and a shockwave surged through the area, creating panic among attendees.

Emergency services, including a large contingent of firefighters and paramedics, responded rapidly to the scene. Initial investigations suggest that a malfunction may have occurred with one of the launching ramps, causing fireworks to detonate too close to the ground and endanger spectators near the Rheinknie Bridge and the adjacent parklands.

Rene Osterhage, a certified pyrotechnician, analyzed the situation, noting that the company responsible for the fireworks is well-regarded in the industry. He speculated that the early explosion of a firework may have destabilized nearby launching tubes, resulting in a dangerous trajectory towards the crowd.

Authorities believe that the mishap was accidental. The police have initiated an investigation into the incident, focusing on potential negligent bodily harm due to the circumstances surrounding the explosion. A spokesperson for the event indicated that a launching ramp may have collapsed either before or during the firework's launch, contributing to the incident.

Among the injured, six individuals suffered serious injuries, including two children. Reports indicate that a three-year-old child sustained significant facial injuries, though there are currently no reports of life-threatening conditions. Emergency response teams worked diligently to transport the injured to hospitals, with the last patient being admitted approximately an hour after the incident was reported.

In light of the unfortunate events, the organizers of the fair decided to conclude the festivities prematurely. They are now reassessing the future of the firework display, considering the implications of this incident for next year's event. The Rheinkirmes typically runs until Sunday.
