Authorities are investigating the tragic accident that led to the death of renowned skydiver and adventurer Felix Baumgartner during a paragliding incident in Italy. Initial reports suggest that a camera may have interfered with the propeller of his motorized paraglider, contributing to the catastrophic failure of the aircraft.
Baumgartner, 56, was paragliding near Porto Sant'Elpidio in the Marche region when the incident occurred. According to sources, he had launched his paraglider from a platform nearby. Witnesses reported that the paraglider suddenly plummeted from low altitude, crashing into a wooden structure at a camping site, resulting in Baumgartner's immediate death despite resuscitation efforts by emergency personnel.
Preliminary investigations conducted by Italian authorities indicate that Baumgartner had attached a second camera to the rear of his paraglider in addition to his body camera. This additional camera was reportedly secured with a string and was being manipulated through an improvised setup. It is believed that during a sudden maneuver or a stall, the camera became entangled in the propeller, causing significant damage that led to the collapse of the glider's canopy.
As the situation unfolded, Baumgartner reportedly attempted to deploy his emergency parachute; however, the altitude at which he was flying was insufficient for the parachute to open effectively, which could have mitigated the impact. Witnesses described the paragliding craft as descending "like a stone" before the crash.
In light of these findings, investigators aim to analyze footage captured by Baumgartner's body camera to gain further insights into the events leading up to the accident. Initial speculation regarding a possible medical emergency, such as a heart attack or fainting spell, has been considered but remains unconfirmed. An autopsy is scheduled to clarify the cause of death, and further examinations will follow.
Baumgartner's long-time partner, Mihaela Radulescu Schwartzenberg, expressed her grief on social media, emphasizing the love and connection they shared. As a celebrated figure in extreme sports, Baumgartner was known for his record-breaking jump from the stratosphere in 2012, a feat that captivated audiences worldwide.
The investigation continues as authorities seek to determine the exact circumstances surrounding this tragic event, with further updates expected in the coming days.
