Porto Sant'Elpidio, Italy - In a tragic turn of events, renowned Austrian extreme athlete Felix Baumgartner has died following a paragliding accident in the coastal town of Porto Sant'Elpidio. The 56-year-old was involved in the fatal incident on Thursday afternoon, as confirmed by local authorities and the Austrian Foreign Ministry.
Reports indicate that Baumgartner had taken off from a paragliding ramp in Fermo while vacationing with his wife. He was navigating toward the Adriatic coast when he reportedly lost control of his paraglider around 4 PM, with eyewitnesses stating that the incident occurred near a pool at the Le Mimose resort.
Witnesses described a scene of chaos as tourists and resort staff rushed to assist Baumgartner, who was found unresponsive upon impact. Despite immediate attempts at resuscitation, emergency medical personnel arrived to pronounce him dead at the scene. Sources suggest that Baumgartner may have suffered a heart attack while airborne, contributing to the tragic outcome.
His wife was notified of the incident and hurried to the location, where many vacationers, including children, were present at the time of the accident. The resort's pool area was filled with guests, and reports indicate that efforts to revive Baumgartner were unfortunately unsuccessful.
In a separate but related incident, a female staff member at the resort sustained injuries after being struck by debris from the paraglider, requiring medical attention and hospitalization.
Felix Baumgartner was best known for his historic jump from the stratosphere in 2012, where he became the first person to break the sound barrier during freefall, jumping from an altitude of approximately 39 kilometers. This remarkable feat garnered him international fame and solidified his status as a leading figure in extreme sports.
As the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident unfolds, tributes and condolences pour in from across the globe for the daring athlete who achieved incredible milestones in his career.
