Fatal Wrong-Way Collision on A5: Two Dead, Child Seriously Injured

A tragic incident occurred in the early hours on the A5 motorway near Neuenburg am Rhein in Baden-Württemberg. A vehicle traveling in the wrong direction collided with another car, resulting in two fatalities and leaving a child with severe injuries.

The accident took place shortly before the Müllheim/Neuenburg junction on the A5, heading towards Basel. According to initial police findings, a car was driven against the prescribed direction of traffic. This vehicle crashed into an oncoming car with Swiss registration, which was traveling legally toward Basel.

The force of the collision was considerable, causing the wrong-way driver's vehicle to catch fire. Emergency services responded swiftly, but the driver was unable to escape the burning wreckage and succumbed to the flames. In the Swiss vehicle, both an adult and a child were trapped by the impact. Firefighters worked to extricate the victims from the damaged car.

Despite the efforts of rescue personnel, the adult passenger in the Swiss car died at the scene due to critical injuries. The child, who also sustained serious injuries, was airlifted to a hospital for urgent medical care. The incident led to the complete closure of the southbound lanes of the A5 for approximately seven and a half hours. Motorists faced significant delays, with traffic backed up for more than an hour. The motorway has since been reopened to regular traffic.
