Fatal Stabbing Among Seasonal Workers on Berry Farm in Nettetal

A violent altercation occurred early Monday morning on a farm in the Kaldenkirchen district of Nettetal, North Rhine-Westphalia, resulting in one fatality and serious injury. The incident took place on a combined asparagus and strawberry farm, where a group of Romanian seasonal laborers were employed for the harvest period.

Authorities were alerted to the situation at 7:22 a.m., prompting a swift response from both police and emergency medical services. A helicopter from the air rescue service was also dispatched to the scene due to the severity of the injuries reported. According to official reports, the conflict involved three individuals--specifically, a couple and another male worker who resided together in employee accommodations on the farm.

During the dispute, which escalated dramatically, a 40-year-old woman sustained multiple stab and cut wounds. Despite being transported by air ambulance to a nearby hospital, she succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival. Her 44-year-old partner was also seriously wounded and required surgical intervention in a local medical facility.

The third individual involved, a 25-year-old male, was apprehended at the scene and is currently regarded by investigators as the main suspect. Authorities have secured a knife believed to have been used in the attack. Investigators from the homicide division have been assembled to examine the circumstances leading to the violence, and forensic experts have begun gathering evidence.

Throughout the day, additional workers present at the farm were interviewed in order to piece together the events that led up to the incident. In March, a dispute among workers on a different farm reportedly resulted in a 26-year-old woman attempting to inflict life-threatening injuries on a 33-year-old colleague. The victim in that case was left in critical condition. Such events have raised concerns about the working and living conditions faced by seasonal laborers in the region, as well as the mechanisms in place for conflict resolution among temporary agricultural workers.

Local authorities, including police and the public prosecutor's office, have launched an investigation into the most recent incident.
