Sat 17th Jan, 2026

A serious traffic accident occurred on the A43 motorway near Haltern am See, resulting in the death of a young motorist and injuries to two other individuals. The incident led to a complete closure of the motorway in the direction of Münster for several hours, causing significant disruption to morning traffic.

According to police reports, the accident took place early in the morning when a passenger vehicle carrying four occupants collided with a lorry. The truck was reportedly re-entering the motorway from the Hohe Mark Ost service area at the time of the collision. The force of the impact resulted in severe damage to the passenger vehicle.

Emergency services, including a rescue helicopter, responded promptly to the scene. Despite their efforts, the 23-year-old driver of the car succumbed to his injuries at the accident site. Two of the vehicle's passengers sustained injuries; one was reported to be in serious condition, while the other was less severely hurt. Both were transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

Authorities confirmed that the fourth person in the car, as well as the lorry driver, were unharmed in the incident. Specialist police teams arrived to document and investigate the scene, carefully gathering evidence to determine the precise circumstances that led to the collision.

The motorway was shut down for approximately six hours to facilitate the rescue operation, accident investigation, and the subsequent clearing of the wreckage. This closure resulted in traffic congestion and delays for motorists travelling towards Münster. By early afternoon, the authorities were able to reopen the affected section of the A43, restoring normal traffic flow.

Initial findings suggest that the collision occurred as the car, travelling at speed, encountered the lorry merging from the service area, leading to the fatal crash. The investigation is ongoing, and police are working to ascertain all contributing factors, including potential driver error, visibility conditions, and possible technical faults in either vehicle.

Incidents such as this underline the ongoing risks associated with motorway travel, especially in situations involving merging traffic and high speeds. Police have urged drivers to exercise heightened caution when approaching service areas and when re-entering major motorways, emphasizing the importance of adhering to speed limits and maintaining full awareness of surrounding vehicles.

Further updates on the investigation are expected as authorities continue to analyze the evidence and interview those involved. The identities of the victims have not been publicly disclosed pending notification of their families.
