A serious traffic accident occurred on the A24 motorway near Kremmen, resulting in the death of a delivery van driver and injuries to two other individuals. The incident took place in the Oberhavel district, disrupting traffic and prompting a comprehensive police investigation.
According to police reports, the accident happened when a 20-year-old driver attempted to overtake another vehicle on the A24 in the direction of Berlin. During the manoeuvre, the young driver moved into the left lane but failed to notice another car already occupying that lane. Realising the potential danger, he abruptly aborted the overtaking attempt and collided with the delivery van, which was travelling ahead of him.
The impact forced the van off the road, causing it to hit the roadside barrier. The vehicle then overturned onto its side before coming to a halt. Shortly after, an 83-year-old motorist approached in his vehicle and crashed into the overturned van. Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene and attempted to revive the 52-year-old van driver. Despite their efforts, the man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Both the elderly driver and the 20-year-old involved in the initial collision sustained minor injuries. They received medical attention and did not require hospitalisation for serious injuries. Authorities reported that the accident led to a prolonged closure of the A24 in the direction of Berlin, causing significant traffic delays for several hours.
The accident occurred between the Linumer Bruch-Süd service area and the Kremmen exit, affecting motorists travelling towards Havelland. Police estimate the total damage from the collision at approximately 80,000 euros. A forensic expert was called to the scene to assist with the ongoing investigation and to help reconstruct the sequence of events that led to the fatal crash.
Law enforcement officials stressed the importance of adhering to traffic regulations, particularly when overtaking on motorways. The case remains under investigation as authorities work to determine the precise causes and any potential liabilities related to the incident.
The tragic accident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with overtaking manoeuvres on busy highways and the need for heightened awareness and caution among all road users. The A24 was reopened to traffic after the completion of emergency response and cleanup operations.
