In Kröv, Rhineland-Palatinate, a family has recently welcomed their newborn son, naming him after the firefighter who saved their lives during a tragic hotel collapse last summer.

The family, consisting of Mark and Edi Hoefnagel-Visser and their two-year-old son Jamie, experienced a horrific ordeal on August 7, 2024, when the historic Hotel Reichsschenke - Zum Ritter Götz unexpectedly collapsed. At the time, Edi was pregnant, and just minutes before the disaster, she shared her pregnancy news with Mark.

The family spent over ten harrowing hours trapped beneath the rubble, with the first floor of the hotel completely caving in. Emergency responders worked tirelessly to rescue those trapped inside, with a total of nine people caught under the debris. Tragically, two individuals were found deceased.

After a prolonged rescue effort, Edi and Jamie were located and brought to safety by firefighter Christoph Reuter. Mark was rescued three hours later, having suffered serious injuries that included a broken arm, damage to his esophagus, and kidney injuries.

Recently, Edi shared on social media that their second son was born on April 24, 2025, and they decided to name him Christoph in honor of the rescuer who risked his life to save them. Edi expressed her gratitude for Reuter's bravery and the role he played in their survival.

All four family members are now recovering, with Mark overcoming his injuries and the family looking forward to brighter days ahead. This heartwarming story of survival and gratitude serves as a reminder of the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
