Record-Breaking Success: 'Exterritorial' Becomes Germany's Most Popular Netflix Film

Mon 2nd Jun, 2025

The German action-thriller film 'Exterritorial' has quickly risen to prominence on Netflix, marking its place as the platform's most successful German film to date. Since its release just a month ago, the film has garnered millions of views globally, surpassing previous hits such as the Oscar-winning anti-war film 'Im Westen nichts Neues' and the action-horror film 'Blood Red Sky'.

Directed by Christian Zübert, 'Exterritorial' has achieved an impressive 76.3 million views, ranking it 16th among all Netflix films and 6th among non-English films, with its popularity continuing to grow. The film, set in Frankfurt, was primarily filmed in Vienna, featuring a fictional building complex not found in the actual city.

The narrative centers around Sara Wulf, portrayed by Jeanne Goursaud, a former soldier whose son mysteriously disappears while they are at a U.S. consulate. The plot unfolds as Sara navigates a web of conspiracy and danger in her desperate quest to find her child. Sara's backstory allows audiences to relate to her as she embodies a regular person thrust into extraordinary circumstances, rather than fitting the typical action hero mold.

The inspiration for 'Exterritorial' stemmed from Zübert's own experiences while filming in Frankfurt. He recalls the lengthy process at the U.S. consulate, which sparked the idea of a narrative involving a parent facing bureaucratic obstacles in a foreign land.

Christian Zübert, known for his previous works including 'Lammbock' and 'Der Fall Collini', directed the film and also co-wrote the script. His approach has been influenced by classic 1970s action films, aiming to create a visceral experience for viewers.

Jeanne Goursaud, who gained recognition for her role in the Netflix series 'Barbaren', delivers a powerful performance as a mother grappling with her past traumas while fighting to save her son. Critics note that her portrayal adds depth to the character, making her journey both compelling and relatable.

The success of 'Exterritorial' underscores a growing trend in the film industry where international productions are gaining traction on streaming platforms, appealing to audiences worldwide and challenging traditional Hollywood narratives.
