Research indicates that individuals in their fifties can significantly enhance their life expectancy by addressing five crucial health factors. These factors include maintaining a healthy weight, controlling blood pressure and cholesterol levels, avoiding smoking, and steering clear of diabetes.
Heart diseases remain the leading cause of death globally, yet many of the associated risk factors are modifiable. Studies suggest that around 50% of the global burden of cardiovascular diseases can be attributed to five adjustable risk factors: hypertension, high cholesterol, obesity or underweight, diabetes, and tobacco use.
An international research team led by experts from Germany has investigated how much life expectancy is affected by these risk factors and the potential gains from lifestyle changes. Their findings were published in the prestigious journal New England Journal of Medicine.
Professor Christina Magnussen, Deputy Director of the Cardiology Clinic at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, collaborated with the Global Cardiovascular Risk Consortium. They analyzed data from over two million participants across 133 cohorts worldwide to assess how traditional cardiovascular risk factors impact the lifetime probability of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and overall mortality.
The study focused on several conditions: arterial hypertension (systolic blood pressure >=130 mmHg), hyperlipidemia (non-HDL cholesterol >=130 mg/dl), diabetes, smoking, and being underweight (BMI <20) or overweight (BMI >=25). The researchers evaluated risk profiles at the age of 50 and estimated lifetime risks up to age 90.
The results revealed that the absence of all five risk factors could lower the lifetime risk of CVD to 13% for women and 21% for men, compared to 24% and 38%, respectively, for those with all risk factors present. In terms of overall mortality, women could gain an average of 14.5 additional years, while men could expect an increase of 11.8 years. Furthermore, the duration of life free from cardiovascular disease could extend by 13.3 years for women and 10.6 years for men.
The significance of each risk factor on longevity is highlighted by the fact that eliminating even one risk factor, particularly diabetes or smoking, can lead to healthy life gains of up to 6.4 years.
