Join us for a fascinating exhibition exploring the storytelling capabilities of art, featuring works from renowned artists such as Albrecht Altdorfer and Peter Paul Rubens. This collection presents a delightful reunion with familiar figures alongside rare discoveries, showcasing masterpieces from the realms of German, Dutch, and Flemish painting from the 16th and early 17th centuries. The exhibition delves into the various facets of storytelling in painting, addressing questions such as how, what, and by whom stories are told. What purposes do artists and their patrons seek to achieve at different times, and who is the intended audience? Is the narrative always clear, or do viewers sometimes find themselves misled?

Centrally featured are the Madonna depictions from the Late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, including the spectacular new acquisition of Hans Baldung Grün's 'Maria als Himmelskönigin,' which will be unveiled to the Munich audience for the first time.

The exhibition opens on Wednesday, 4.6, at 18:30 with speeches by Anton Biebl, interim director of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, Gabriel Dette, head of the collection for German and Dutch painting, and Mirjam Neumeister, head of the Flemish Baroque painting collection.
