Treffen des Literaturclubs
Join us for an engaging literature meeting on Tuesday, 12th August 2025, from 18:30 to 20:30 at the Tolstoi Library, located at Aldringenstr. 4, 80639 Munich. This event is designed for young individuals with a passion for literature.
We will delve into Alexander Kuprinin's book "Yama-The Pit," originally written in Russian. This work is renowned for its poignant critique of the age-old issue of prostitution. Kuprinin's most famous novel, "Die Grube" (Yama), is often referred to as 'the first and last honest work on the subject of prostitution.' It explores the life in the red-light district of a southern port city, focusing on the daily realities faced by sex workers, including their household management, economic conditions, and social stratification. The narrative provides an unflinching look at their business dealings and the age-old art of love practices, emphasizing the chilling notion that 'the horror lies in the absence of horror.' Despite its setting, "Yama" fundamentally resonates on a universal level, transcending cultural boundaries with its themes.
This meeting promises to be a thought-provoking discussion on the complex themes presented in Kuprinin's work.
