Susan Sontag »Everything matters«
On Saturday, June 7, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and additional dates until November 30, 2025, the exhibition celebrates Susan Sontag, the renowned New York intellectual. As a 16-year-old, she wrote in her diary, 'Everything matters.' For Sontag, an influential essayist, writer, and culture enthusiast, it was essential to read, write, observe, act, and live fully. This exhibition presents her as an icon of philosophical thought in the 20th century, featuring five sections that take visitors on a journey through her life in New York and her connections. The exhibition emphasizes the importance of forming personal opinions, embracing the impact of art, and traveling to significant places. Sontag's radical independence, both aesthetically and politically, was her passionate creed. As Paul Auster, her friend for decades, noted, 'The world was her subject.' This exhibition is rediscovered by a new generation, showcasing numerous unpublished photographs, manuscripts, quotes, film clips, personal belongings from her estate, and an extensive accompanying program that includes films (at the Filmmuseum), cultural clubbing (also at Unter Deck), open reading circles (also at Glitch Bookstore), curator-led tours, and after-work tours.
The opening event features an introduction by Anna-Lisa Dieter (Humboldt Forum) and a reading by Katharina Bach (Münchner Kammerspiele) on Thursday, May 22, at 7:00 PM (Gallery EG, until November 30).
