Herbert List - Stadt in Trümmern
Join us for an insightful exhibition titled Herbert List - Stadt in Trümmern, showcasing the ruins of post-war Munich through the lens of renowned photographer Herbert List (1903-1975). This exhibition is hosted by the Photography Collection of the Munich City Museum at the Rathausgalerie. As we approach the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in 2025, this collection features a selection of ruin photographs from the aftermath of the war, focusing on a series of images captured by List upon his return to Munich in 1945.
The exhibition also includes works from amateur photographers and professional postcards, highlighting the dramatic impact of the bombings on the city. Notably, the collection features slides taken by tower observer Clemens Bergmann, who documented the aerial bombardment of Munich from the towers of the Frauenkirche. In contrast to the documentary style, List's artistic compositions reflect timeless aesthetics, reminiscent of his earlier work with ancient ruins in Greece.
Due to the comprehensive renovation of the Munich City Museum, which will last until 2031, this exhibition marks a unique collaboration between the Rathausgalerie and the Munich City Museum, offering an interim program at external venues.
Entry to the exhibition and participation in the events is free of charge.
