Gülbin Ünlü. Nostralgia

Haus der Kunst

On Friday, June 27, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM, the Haus der Kunst will unveil Gülbin Ünlü's new work titled Nostralgia. This exhibition exists at the intersection of function and fiction, exploring a state of perpetual suspension--a place where access is denied and completion is delayed. The work lingers in a moment of expectation that never resolves.

Nostralgia expands space and time through subtle interventions at often-overlooked thresholds of the building. It begins at the personal entrance, inviting visitors to explore the institution through inaccessible yet present doors. This is an invitation to traverse the space without a fixed destination, engaging in the act of encountering.

The work transforms into a silent choreography of immobility, investigating the latent potential of spaces--activated by presence and vitality. Rooted in the science-fiction concept of portals, Ünlü's work opens up unexpected encounters with erased histories, alternative realities, and speculative futures. By directing attention to non-exhibition spaces, Ünlü prompts a shifted perception: to pause, to look again, and to regard architecture not as a rigid structure but as a location where parallel worlds hover--unrealized, constantly changing, shaped not by what is displayed but by how we see.

Ünlü employs a variety of media, interweaving motifs to create layered images that adopt sculptural forms and performative possibilities. Her approach melds techno-Orientalism with erased or marginalized cultural imaginations. These portals do not open yet still draw us in. They reference timelines that have diverged, systems that were put on standby before ever being activated. These doors remain closed to the body but open to speculation. They are not an invitation to cross but to linger--in the tension between the visible and the hidden.

Ünlü's work conceptualizes the entire building as a speculative construct: a structure navigated not only through its corridors and functions but also through the unrealized realities it houses within its walls.

Curated by Lydia Antoniou.

During the Open Haus event, every last Friday of the month, Ünlü invites the band TAF (Turkish-Armenian Friendship) to activate the portals through sound, movement, and presence.

Performance "step through" with TAF (Turkish-Armenian Friendship) will take place on June 27 at 6:00 PM (Personal entrance, until February 22, 2026).
