Gerhard Richter
On Wednesday, April 30, 2025, at 19:00, the exhibition titled Gerhard Richter: 81 Drawings · 1 Strip-Painting · 1 Edition will open at the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich. This exhibition showcases the artistic journey of renowned painter Gerhard Richter, focusing on his latest drawings created in the solitude of his atelier after the conclusion of his painting career. These drawings must meet his own rigorous standards: 'The essential and most challenging thing is to create something that is good.'
Richter's drawings are particularly significant as they reveal every nuance and uncertainty on the paper. This exhibition offers a moment to reflect on the value of drawing in contemporary art, highlighting its role as a vital expression of human intellect and creativity. The State Graphic Collection of Munich aims to explore the significance of drawing in the 21st century through this project.
Accompanying the series of drawings is a newly created strip painting that dominates the exhibition space with its imposing presence. The exhibition opens with the edition 'Skull,' created in 2017, displayed in one of the twelve otherwise empty showcases for graphics. This work serves as both a provocative and enigmatic introduction to the exhibition.
A catalog in both German and English will be available, titled 'Gerhard Richter · 81 Drawings · 1 Strip-Painting · 1 Edition,' edited by Michael Hering and published by Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther und Franz König, ISBN 978-3-7533-0836-4.
The exhibition will be on display until June 8, 2025.
