Garten Eden - Yoshihiro Suda

Pinakothek der Moderne

The exhibition 'Garten Eden - Yoshihiro Suda' at the Pinakothek der Moderne explores the influence of Japanese woodblock prints from the 18th and 19th centuries on European modern art. The term 'Ukiyo-e' refers to the 'pictures of the flowing world,' which were intricately produced in Japan and spread globally, inspiring Western artists from French Impressionists to members of the Blaue Reiter. These works continue to captivate with their colorful, formal, and technical virtuosity.

In 2020/21, the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München received a donation of approximately 250 prints from some of the great masters of this medium, including Hokusai and Hiroshige. The renowned Japanese sculptor and installation artist Yoshihiro Suda has been invited to share his perspective on the collections of Japanese and European art. The concept of the 'Garden of Eden' is intrinsically linked to the idea of a paradise where humanity lives in harmony with untouched nature. In modern visual arts, this utopia manifests in various nature fantasies, responding to the societal upheavals and existential challenges faced by modern humans in the 20th and 21st centuries.

Suda's minimalist nature capriccios created specifically for this exhibition invite a comparative viewing of these 'soul landscapes' from the classical modern collection, encouraging a rethinking of nature representation. His works, often easily overlooked in public spaces, remind us to practice mindfulness in a fast-paced world. A dry leaf riddled with insect damage, a wild plant sprouting from a crack, or a delicate flower can evoke wonder and remind us of the significance of seemingly trivial things.

Yoshihiro Suda's career began with his groundbreaking installation 'Ginza Weed Theory' in 1993, where he juxtaposed ordinary weeds with a refined architectural space lined with gold leaf, challenging the perception of nature within economically lucrative urban centers. His subtle sculptures fill spaces without overwhelming them, appearing as fleeting impressions of nature that, although seemingly lost in the museum setting, capture the spirit of the place.

Through this unique presentation, Suda bridges various artistic worlds and renews the concept of cultural transfer for the present, creating an inspiring and unusual exhibition that teaches us to marvel and observe anew.
