Fünf Freunde. Cage, Cunningham, Johns, Rauschenberg, Twombly
The Museum Brandhorst is taking an unprecedented look at a group of artists who have significantly influenced post-war art through music, dance, painting, sculpture, and drawing. This exhibition highlights John Cage (1912-1992), Merce Cunningham (1919-2009), Jasper Johns (*1930), Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008), and Cy Twombly (1928-2011). The close collaboration among these five artists fostered a unique connection across various artistic disciplines.
Featuring over 150 artworks, scores, stage props, costumes, photographs, and archival materials, the exhibition offers insights into the interplay of these five friends. It sheds new light on Cy Twombly's work, a key focus of the museum's collection, situating his practice within the artistic context of his early years.
Complementing the exhibition is the Festival Fünf Freunde, which showcases dance performances and concerts in Cy Twombly's Rosensaal, focusing on the works of Merce Cunningham and John Cage.
The opening event will include remarks from Prof. Dr. Bernhard Maaz, General Director of the Bavarian State Painting Collections, and Achim Hochdörfer, Director of the Museum Brandhorst, followed by a party featuring a DJ set by Jean-Biche from Paris on Wednesday, April 9, starting at 19:00. The exhibition runs until August 17, 2025.
