Die Dritte Generation. Der Holocaust im familiären Gedächtnis

How do we remember when there are few witnesses left to recount the Holocaust as it was experienced firsthand? The exhibition "The Third Generation. The Holocaust in Familial Memory" addresses this question. Survivors of the Holocaust have passed down their stories, along with their traumas, to their children and grandchildren. While the Second Generation grew up grappling with the psychological and physical scars of their parents, the Third Generation looks at their family histories from a greater temporal distance, where memory and silence, family myths and secrets, as well as the burdensome or absent family legacy are omnipresent.

The exhibition explores various strategies for coping with and confronting the legacy of the Holocaust. It also closely examines the struggle for societal recognition of the Holocaust among Sinti and Roma. Through primarily artistic works, it narrates themes of archiving and the desire to break the silence, appropriation and delineation, conscious remembering and the wish to forget, the omnipresence of the Holocaust, and the significant gaps in family histories along with attempts to fill them. The exhibition was initially realized at the Jewish Museum Vienna and is now adjusted and expanded for its second station at the Jewish Museum Munich. Here, a local perspective has been more strongly emphasized. Munich-based artists demonstrate through their works how profoundly the Holocaust continues to influence their present lives. The themes of provenance and restitution, as well as the handling of the fragmented legacy of certain objects in our collection and the management of this familial heritage, are highlighted in the Munich exhibition through several works.
