CATS

Deutsches Theater

The classic from the West End is finally back! Grace on four paws - CATS invites you to the ball: The unparalleled original production embarks on a grand six-month tour across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland starting in April 2025.

First, there are just glowing eyes. There's a purring here, a soft hissing there. In the silvery light of the full moon on a starry night, a London junkyard transforms into the ballroom of the Jellicle Cats - affectionately referred to as "dear little cats" in England. We might simply call them little kitties. With breathtaking acrobatic choreography, magic tricks, and swaying hips, the character cats vie for the favor of their wise leader, Old Deuteronomy. He will choose one cat that will experience the miracle of rebirth. One by one, the furry performers introduce themselves. And when the cast-off aging diva Grizabella bravely steps forward to sing of happier days, there will be complete silence: With 'Memory,' she gifts the audience one of the greatest moments in musical history.

From April 9 to September 21, 2025, the world's most famous cats will once again take the stages of selected venues in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, proving once again that this masterpiece continues to enchant audiences even after over four decades!

A Unique Success Story

Since its premiere in 1981, CATS has revolutionized the musical world. The Jellicle Cats have gracefully broken records worldwide, captivating over 73 million viewers in more than 30 countries. And there is no end in sight for this success story! Even over forty years after its premiere in London's West End, the character cats--from the cunning Macavity to the magical Mistoffelees and the innocent white Victoria, to the irresistible daredevil Rum Tum Tugger--have lost none of their cross-generational charm. They still captivate audiences as diverse as the feline troupe itself.

Timeless melodies and unique choreography in a fresh production

Starting in April 2025, the classic will be experienced in its original English version, presented in an authentic yet refreshed successful production from the London West End, which was nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award as 'Best Musical Revival' in 2015. In the summer of 2022, CATS won the hearts of the audience in the renowned Semperoper Dresden. The Sächsische Zeitung praised the premiere of this celebrated and sold-out three-week guest performance, stating: 'A feast for the eyes, ears, and heart! With more pep and sensuality than previous versions, even more atmospheric, yet always true to the original.'

This original was based on T.S. Eliot's poetry collection 'Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats.' Dramaturg and director Trevor Nunn developed a concept that honors Eliot's linguistic genius while functioning beautifully on stage. Complementing this, Andrew Lloyd Webber composed his musical masterpiece--a genre-mix with unique melodies that have become classics in their own right. Gillian Lynne's groundbreaking choreography and John Napier's iconic costumes, who also created the impressive stage design, perfect this total work of art: A playful union of feline movements and human traits.

CATS has already won seven Tony Awards and three Drama Desk Awards. 'Still the ultimate,' cheers The Times. 'Immortal melodies, a spectacular stage design, and an outstanding cast,' agrees the Daily Mirror. And FAZ believes: 'As timeless as, for example, West Side Story. During the minute-long applause at the Alte Oper, many in the audience wish they could live a life like the bonded cat ensemble: Friendly, peaceful, fearless, and free.'
