In a precautionary measure, approximately 300 residents of the village of Blatten in the Lötschental region of the Swiss Alps have been evacuated due to the imminent threat of a rockslide. The decision was made as a massive rock overhang shows signs of instability, posing a significant risk to the community located at an elevation of 1,540 meters.
Officials from the regional crisis management team reported that the evacuation was conducted swiftly to ensure the safety of all residents. The picturesque village, nestled in the Valais canton and situated above the Rhone Valley, is known for its stunning alpine views and outdoor activities, but has recently been under threat from geological instability.
Earlier in the week, some homes in Blatten had already been vacated as a precautionary measure. The village, which is the final settlement in the Lötschental valley, was completely cleared of residents on the day of the announcement, with no tourists present at that time. The area is also home to a lodging facility that can accommodate up to 64 guests, which has also been vacated.
Authorities have restricted access to hiking trails in the region since the previous week, anticipating potential dangers from falling debris. The situation escalated after a recent rockfall event triggered a mudslide in the area, with debris accumulating approximately 500 meters above the Lonza River.
Experts from the Valais Department of Natural Hazards have indicated that the potential for another rockfall remains high, with estimates suggesting that as much as five million cubic meters of rock could detach from the mountainside if the situation worsens. This alarming scenario highlights the geological vulnerabilities present in the region, particularly under changing environmental conditions.
Matthias Ebener, the information officer for the regional command center, emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting that the risk posed to the village of Blatten is significant and requires immediate action to safeguard the lives of its inhabitants.
As the situation evolves, local authorities are closely monitoring geological conditions and working to ensure the safety of residents and the integrity of nearby structures. The community remains on alert as they await further assessments from experts and updates from local officials.
