Eutelsat Appoints New CEO Amidst Industry Challenges

Tue 6th May, 2025

Eutelsat, the European satellite operator, has announced a significant leadership change with the appointment of Jean-Francois Fallacher as its new CEO, effective June 1. This decision was made during a board meeting held on Sunday and follows the tenure of Eva Berneke, who has led the company since January 2022.

Fallacher, who brings extensive experience from his previous role as Executive Vice President and CEO of Orange France, is stepping into a role that presents considerable challenges in both geopolitical and financial arenas. His appointment comes at a critical time as Eutelsat aims to adapt to the rapidly evolving telecommunications landscape.

The transition in leadership is particularly noteworthy given the current climate in Europe, where there is a concerted effort to establish independent options for commercial and military satellite communications. This shift is driven by the desire to reduce reliance on SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet services. The European Commission has been exploring ways to support Ukraine in securing satellite communication capabilities, with Eutelsat being positioned as a viable alternative to Starlink.

Recent reports have indicated that Eutelsat is facing financial pressures, requiring the company to raise additional funds to meet its debt obligations. The company concluded the year 2024 with losses, and industry analysts suggest that significant investments are necessary for expanding its satellite network. Eutelsat previously estimated that its collaboration with OneWeb could increase annual revenue to $2 billion by 2027. However, the company has revised its projections, indicating a need for over three times the number of satellites originally anticipated, necessitating financing of up to EUR2.2 billion.

Fallacher expressed optimism about joining Eutelsat at a pivotal moment in its history, emphasizing the rapid technological advancements and the importance of satellite networks in today's increasingly complex geopolitical environment. Eutelsat's strategic focus includes significant projects such as the merger with OneWeb, which is expected to bolster its position in the global satellite communication market.

This leadership change marks a new chapter for Eutelsat as it navigates through these multifaceted challenges and seeks to strengthen its role within the telecommunications ecosystem.
