EU Commission Launches Investigation into SAP's Practices

The European Commission has initiated an investigation into SAP, the leading German software company, over allegations of anti-competitive practices. This move places the highly valuable corporation under scrutiny regarding its maintenance and support service operations.

The inquiry stems from suspicions that SAP may have distorted competition by unfairly disadvantaging rival firms that provide maintenance services for its software solutions. The Commission's concerns center on whether SAP's policies restrict customers from utilizing third-party maintenance options.

Furthermore, the Commission has raised issues regarding SAP's policies on maintenance for unused software licenses, which customers allegedly cannot cancel. This situation obligates them to continue payments for services they do not use. Additionally, clients wishing to resume services after a break are reportedly subject to reconnection fees and back payments, which has led to accusations of exploitation and unfair competitive practices against third-party providers.

In response to the investigation, the European Commission is conducting a comprehensive examination of the matter. SAP may have the opportunity to submit commitments to address the Commission's concerns, but failure to resolve the issues could result in potential penalties for the company.
