The European Union has implemented its first comprehensive regulations concerning the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), officially known as the AI Act. These regulations, which came into effect on February 2, 2025, aim to establish a framework for the responsible deployment of AI technologies across member states.
One of the key provisions of the new legislation is the prohibition of AI systems that assess social behavior. This means that individuals cannot be categorized, rewarded, or penalized based on their behavior through AI programs. Additionally, the use of facial recognition technology in public spaces is largely banned, although exceptions are made for law enforcement agencies. These agencies may utilize facial recognition to investigate serious crimes such as human trafficking and terrorism.
Under the new rules, companies engaged in AI development or deployment must evaluate their systems according to the level of risk they present and implement necessary measures to comply with these regulations. The European Commission asserts that the primary goal of this legislation is to safeguard consumer rights while ensuring that AI is used in an ethical and responsible manner.
The regulations mark a significant step in the EU's ongoing effort to regulate emerging technologies and address concerns surrounding privacy, security, and ethical implications of AI. By establishing these guidelines, the EU aims to set a global standard for AI governance, promoting innovation while protecting the rights and freedoms of individuals.
