As summer approaches, families flock to beaches and pools to escape the heat. However, these popular destinations come with inherent risks that require attention and precaution. Experts emphasize the importance of safety measures to ensure a fun and secure experience for everyone.
Dr. Eric Costanzo from Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center advises beachgoers to be cautious of rip currents, which are fast-moving channels of water that flow away from the shore. These currents can be deceptive, often appearing as calmer, darker spots amidst the waves. If caught in one, individuals should swim parallel to the shore to break free rather than fighting against the current.
It is crucial to swim at designated beaches where lifeguards are present, as they can provide guidance and immediate assistance in emergencies. Everyone, regardless of swimming proficiency, should avoid swimming alone and should always stay within reach of a supervising adult, particularly children who may be more vulnerable to strong waves.
Sun safety is another critical aspect of summer fun. To protect against harmful UV rays, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and reapply it every two hours, especially after swimming. Wearing protective clothing, such as hats and sunglasses, and hydrating consistently throughout the day are also essential practices to prevent heat-related illnesses.
Swimming safety extends beyond sun protection. Diving headfirst into unknown waters or jumping into the ocean from piers can lead to severe injuries. A safe landing technique is to enter the water flat to minimize impact, with arms positioned to shield the head. In cases of injuries, such as jellyfish stings, rinsing the affected area with seawater and carefully removing any tentacles with tweezers is recommended. Should symptoms escalate, seeking medical attention is advisable.
While pools may seem safer than open water, they present their own dangers, particularly for children. Continuous adult supervision is essential, and safety measures such as installing a fence with a self-closing and self-latching gate greatly reduce the risk of accidents. Other recommended practices include teaching children to swim while ensuring they are always watched, covering pool drains to prevent entrapment, and maintaining a no-running policy around the pool area.
In addition to these precautions, it is crucial to keep a phone nearby in case of emergencies and to be familiar with CPR techniques. Alcohol consumption poses significant risks when swimming, as it impairs judgment and coordination. Individuals should refrain from swimming under the influence to avoid accidents.
Weather conditions also play a vital role in water safety. Sudden thunderstorms can pose hazards such as lightning, so individuals should exit the water immediately upon hearing thunder or seeing lightning.
By following these safety guidelines, families can enjoy a summer filled with fun and memorable experiences at the beach or pool while minimizing risks.
