As summer approaches, the necessity of wearing sunglasses becomes increasingly clear, not just for style, but primarily for eye protection. An ophthalmologist from Baylor College of Medicine emphasizes the critical role sunglasses play in safeguarding our vision throughout the year.
Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun pose a significant risk to eye health, potentially leading to various eye conditions. An assistant professor of ophthalmology at Baylor, Dr. Masih Ahmed, explains that exposure to UV rays can harm different parts of the eye. Short-term exposure can exacerbate dry eye symptoms or lead to photokeratitis, a condition akin to a sunburn on the surface of the eye. This condition usually resolves itself over time, but the long-term effects of UV exposure can be more severe.
Chronic exposure to UV rays is linked to the accelerated development of cataracts, macular degeneration, and pterygia, which is a growth of tissue on the eye's surface that can impair vision. To mitigate these risks, wearing UV-blocking sunglasses is essential.
When selecting sunglasses, it is crucial to ensure they provide 100% UV protection. Dr. Ahmed advises choosing sunglasses that offer ample coverage, as light can often enter from the sides. Polarized lenses are particularly beneficial when spending time on reflective surfaces such as water or snow, as they help to reduce glare.
Interestingly, when wearing polarized sunglasses, looking at screens such as computers or smartphones may lead to distorted visibility, as these lenses filter light in a specific direction. Therefore, while polarized lenses are advantageous in bright conditions, they may not be ideal for screen use.
Even on overcast days, UV rays remain a concern, making sunglasses a wise choice for outdoor activities. However, they are unnecessary at night or during periods of significant cloud cover.
For those engaged in outdoor tasks like gardening or lawn work, sunglasses made from polycarbonate materials provide an additional layer of protection. They can act as safety glasses, shielding the eyes from debris and potential injuries while working outdoors.
