Escalation in Ukraine: Attacks Intensify Ahead of Trump's Inauguration

Sat 18th Jan, 2025

Kiev/Moscow - In the lead-up to Donald Trump's inauguration, tensions between Russia and Ukraine have escalated dramatically. Recent Russian missile strikes on the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, and the city of Kryvyj Rih have resulted in multiple fatalities, as both nations engage in offensive actions to bolster their negotiating positions ahead of potential peace talks following Trump's assumption of office.

Reports indicate that at least eight individuals lost their lives due to Russian missile attacks in Kiev and Kryvyj Rih, with both cities experiencing significant damage. In response, Ukraine launched drone attacks targeting Russian fuel depots, which reportedly ignited fires in two locations.

Unlike previous assaults on Kiev, this time there was no advance warning; air raid sirens sounded only after explosions occurred. Ukrainian officials stated that ballistic missiles were utilized in the attacks on the capital, leading to the temporary closure of the Lukjaniwska subway station, situated near a defense manufacturing facility that has been a recurrent target of Russian strikes.

In the aftermath of the missile strikes, images on social media showcased damaged vehicles and flooding caused by a ruptured water main near the subway station, leading to temporary water supply disruptions in several neighborhoods. Remainders of the missiles were reported to have fallen in various districts of the city.

In Kryvyj Rih, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the casualties and injuries resulting from the missile strikes, noting that four individuals died and 14 were wounded. He emphasized that the attacks could have been averted had Ukraine possessed the air defense systems under discussion with its allies.

Kryvyj Rih, Zelenskyy's hometown, has frequently faced bombardment since the onset of the Russian invasion nearly three years ago. As the conflict continues, concerns loom over a potential shift in U.S. military aid to Ukraine following Trump's inauguration. Observers fear that Trump may significantly reduce support for Ukraine, which has relied heavily on Western military assistance since February 2022.

During his campaign, Trump claimed he could resolve the conflict swiftly, but his post-election statements have been more cautious, suggesting he would require six months to achieve peace. The current administration under Joe Biden has been a critical supporter of Ukraine, and a transition to Trump's leadership could alter the dynamics of U.S. support.

In retaliation, Ukrainian forces have increasingly targeted military assets and fuel supplies in Russia to disrupt logistical support for military operations. Reports from the Russian regions of Tula and Kaluga indicated that Ukrainian drone strikes resulted in fires at two fuel depots, although no injuries were reported.

The ongoing gas dispute with Slovakia has also drawn attention, with Zelenskyy expressing support for the Slovak opposition amid tensions with Prime Minister Robert Fico regarding Russian gas supplies. The conflict has led to disagreements over transit contracts, prompting further diplomatic strains.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has expressed hope for an end to the war within the year, emphasizing the need for dialogue to cease hostilities. Scholz and SPD leader Lars Klingbeil have warned against any agreements that undermine Ukrainian sovereignty.

As the geopolitical landscape shifts with Trump's upcoming presidency, the international community remains watchful of the evolving situation in Ukraine, with implications for regional stability and alliances.
