Elsen Bridge in Berlin to Reopen with Two Lanes in Each Direction Starting Monday

Berlin's Elsen Bridge, a critical thoroughfare connecting Treptow and Friedrichshain, will see an important improvement in traffic flow as of Monday morning. The new section of the bridge is set to offer two lanes for vehicles in both directions, addressing the bottleneck that has long caused daily congestion for commuters.

The phased reopening follows extensive reconstruction triggered by irreparable damage to the old Elsen Bridge. The original structure was demolished in 2018 after it was deemed unsalvageable. Since then, motorists have contended with reduced capacity, particularly in the direction of Friedrichshain, where only one lane has been available on the temporary bridge. This limited configuration has resulted in persistent traffic jams, especially during peak travel hours.

The transition to the expanded traffic setup will occur over several days. From March 12, the new pedestrian and cycling paths on the rebuilt section will open, replacing the provisional routes on the temporary bridge. On March 13, two lanes on the northwestern section of the new bridge will be accessible for outbound traffic towards the A100 motorway. As these changes take effect, the corresponding lanes on the temporary structure will close to motor vehicles but remain accessible to public transport, emergency vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians.

The final stage of the transition is scheduled for Monday at 6 a.m., when the full 2+2 lane configuration will be in place, allowing two lanes in each direction for general vehicular traffic. This upgrade is expected to significantly ease congestion and provide a more reliable commuting experience for thousands of drivers crossing the Spree each day.

While this development marks a major milestone in the bridge's reconstruction, further work is planned. Construction activities beneath the bridge and the clearance of surplus work sites are anticipated to continue until the end of June 2026. Once these phases are complete, the bridge is projected to expand to a 3+3 lane configuration, offering three lanes in each direction and further enhancing its capacity.

One of the temporary bridges currently in use will remain in place for the foreseeable future. The timeline for reconstructing the southeastern part of the Elsen Bridge depends on the plans of the Autobahn GmbH, particularly concerning the forthcoming 17th section of the A100 motorway extension towards Lichtenberg. The potential need for space for the motorway project may influence future decisions regarding the remaining portions of the Elsen Bridge.

The Elsen Bridge is among several major Berlin bridges undergoing renewal due to structural issues linked to aging and outdated construction methods. The city has initiated numerous infrastructure projects in recent years to address the widespread problem of deteriorating bridges. The reopening of the upgraded Elsen Bridge is seen as a key step towards improving traffic efficiency and safety while accommodating the growing demands on Berlin's urban transportation network.

As the new traffic arrangements come into effect, commuters and local residents can expect a noticeable reduction in travel delays, at least until the next phase of construction begins. City officials have assured the public that, barring any unforeseen weather disruptions, the current schedule for the bridge's reopening will proceed as planned.
