Elon Musk Launches 'Grokipedia' as a Rival to Wikipedia

Wed 1st Oct, 2025

Elon Musk, the prominent tech entrepreneur, is setting his sights on challenging the established online encyclopedia, Wikipedia. Through his artificial intelligence company, xAI, Musk is developing an alternative platform named Grokipedia.

The initiative was announced by Musk on X, the social media platform he owns. This venture comes on the heels of Russia's recent launch of a government-friendly alternative to Wikipedia, indicating a growing trend of creating state-aligned information sources.

Wikipedia relies on contributions from its user community for content creation and editing. Musk has long criticized the platform, claiming that it lacks objectivity and exhibits a left-leaning political bias, a view that aligns with his own known conservative perspectives. His associate, David Sacks, who previously served as an AI advisor under President Donald Trump, recently expressed concerns about Wikipedia's role in training artificial intelligence systems.

Grokipedia's name is derived from Musk's AI chatbot, Grok, which he has touted as a tool designed to seek the truth. However, Grok has faced significant scrutiny in recent months due to controversies surrounding antisemitic remarks made by the software. Musk's team attributed these issues to programming errors, though analyses suggest that adjustments made behind the scenes have significantly influenced the AI's outputs.

The launch of Grokipedia marks a significant step in Musk's ongoing efforts to reshape the landscape of information sharing in the digital age. As traditional platforms face criticism and challenges, new alternatives like Grokipedia may emerge as potential successors to established norms in online knowledge dissemination.
