The island of Norderney is set to become accessible by a new, eco-friendly ferry service. The Norden-Frisia shipping company is introducing an electric-powered catamaran that will transport passengers to and from this popular East Frisian destination.
This vessel, which operates solely on electricity and is registered under the German flag, represents a significant advancement in sustainable maritime transport. The new catamaran is scheduled to be unveiled to the media on Thursday, and a regular service is expected to commence in April. The company has confirmed that the vessel and its charging systems are fully operational, with the crew already trained and prepared for daily operations.
The electric catamaran has a capacity to accommodate up to 150 passengers and is a key component of Norden-Frisia's broader sustainability initiative. This initiative focuses on enhancing eco-friendly travel options to the islands of Juist and Norderney, departing from Norden-Norddeich. With a travel time of approximately 30 minutes, the vessel's battery can be recharged in half an hour, thanks to the installation of photovoltaic systems on the company's properties and sheltered parking areas. Additionally, a battery storage system will help manage excess solar energy efficiently.
In a statement regarding the project, the shipping company emphasized its commitment to transforming maritime travel towards a more sustainable future, highlighting significant investments in modernizing its fleet. The electric propulsion system and associated infrastructure have received funding support from both federal and state programs, with the total investment reported to be in the double-digit million range.
The captain of the catamaran expressed excitement about the vessel's performance, noting that the acceleration provided by the electric motors offers a unique experience even for seasoned sailors.
This innovative service aims to reduce carbon emissions from maritime transport, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change and promote cleaner travel options. As the shipping industry increasingly embraces electrification, this initiative positions Norden-Frisia as a leader in sustainable ferry operations.
