Elderly Man Falls Victim to Elaborate Scam in Oldenswort

Mon 6th Oct, 2025

In Oldenswort, a senior citizen became a victim of a sophisticated scam, resulting in the loss of a substantial five-figure sum to an unknown fraudster. The incident occurred on the morning of October 3, 2025, when the elderly individual received a distressing phone call.

During the call, a man impersonating a close relative claimed to be gravely ill and hospitalized, stating that an expensive infusion was necessary to save his life. As the conversation progressed, the caller handed the phone over to someone posing as a doctor, who reinforced the urgency of the medical situation.

Under this pretense, the senior was persuaded to hand over the money to a courier waiting in Toftinger Street. After the exchange, the suspect fled towards Utholmer Street. The courier was described as a male, approximately 1.68 meters tall, aged between 26 and 28, with short, smooth hair, a black chin beard, brown eyes, wearing dark jeans and a multi-striped sweater.

The Criminal Police in Husum have launched an investigation into the incident and are actively seeking witnesses. Authorities urge anyone who observed suspicious activity in Oldenswort on that day, particularly in Toftinger and Utholmer Streets, to contact them at 04841 8300 or via email at Husum.KPSt@polizei.landsh.de.

This alarming event highlights the increasing prevalence of such scams targeting vulnerable individuals, particularly the elderly. It serves as a reminder for the community to remain vigilant and cautious when receiving unsolicited calls, especially those involving requests for money.
