An 86-year-old man sustained life-threatening injuries after being struck by a bus in Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia, on Friday evening. The incident occurred around 6:45 PM when the man attempted to catch a bus that had just departed from a nearby stop. In his haste, he lost his footing and fell, positioning himself dangerously close to the bus's path.

According to police reports, the vehicle's heavy tires tragically severed the man's left leg. Bystanders quickly alerted emergency services, and some even took immediate action to assist the injured man. They managed to apply a tourniquet with a belt to the severely bleeding wound, an act that likely saved his life.

The victim lost a significant amount of blood, prompting the dispatch of a rescue helicopter, which delivered crucial blood supplies directly to the scene. Despite the rapid response from first responders, the man lost consciousness and required extensive resuscitation efforts at the site of the accident.

Shortly thereafter, a helicopter landed with a medical team and additional blood products, which enabled the emergency personnel to stabilize his condition. He was subsequently transported to a university hospital for further treatment.

The police have cordoned off the area to conduct a thorough investigation. A specialized accident investigation team from Bochum has been deployed to secure evidence and determine the exact circumstances surrounding this unfortunate event. As of now, the precise details leading to the accident remain unclear, and inquiries are ongoing.
