Elderly Cyclist Injured in Collision with Freight Train in Herzhorn

In a serious incident on the railway line connecting Hamburg and Westerland, an 80-year-old cyclist was struck by a freight train while attempting to cross a private railway crossing. The accident occurred around 12:45 PM, prompting an immediate response from the Federal Police, who quickly closed the railway line and dispatched emergency services to the scene.

Preliminary reports indicate that the cyclist attempted to navigate the crossing just as the train was approaching. Despite the train conductor's efforts to brake, the cyclist and his bicycle were hit, resulting in both being thrown into the gravel beside the tracks.

The cyclist sustained injuries and received prompt medical attention from the emergency services, who transported him to a nearby hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Additionally, the train driver was relieved from duty due to the traumatic nature of the incident.

Emergency response teams, including firefighters from Glückstadt and Blohmsche Wildnis, were on site, along with two ambulances and a paramedic. Both state and federal police were present to secure the area and manage the situation.
