Efficacy of Triple Semicircular Canal Plugging in Managing Meniere's Disease Vertigo

Sun 2nd Feb, 2025

Recent research has highlighted the effectiveness of triple semicircular canal plugging (TSCP) as a treatment for controlling vertigo in patients diagnosed with Meniere's disease (MD). This notable finding was detailed in a systematic review and meta-analysis published in the journal PLOS ONE.

The analysis involved a comprehensive review of data from seven studies, encompassing 367 patients suffering from Meniere's disease. The objective was to evaluate the impact of TSCP on both vertigo symptoms and hearing capabilities in patients who had not found relief from traditional treatments or less invasive surgical options.

Results indicated that TSCP provided significant relief from vertigo, demonstrating a success rate of approximately 99%. However, researchers also noted a concerning 22% incidence of hearing loss associated with the procedure. Further analysis revealed that the duration of the disease and the length of follow-up did not significantly alter the rates of hearing loss or vertigo control.

Specifically, in patients with a disease duration exceeding 12 months, the incidence of hearing loss was recorded at 14%, while it rose to 24% in those with a shorter disease duration. Interestingly, both groups maintained high rates of vertigo control, at 100% and 99% respectively. In terms of follow-up duration, studies with follow-up periods longer than 24 months reported hearing loss rates of 23%, compared to 20% in those with shorter follow-up times.

The authors of the study concluded that for patients with Meniere's disease who have not benefited from conventional treatments or less destructive surgical options, TSCP can offer significant relief from vertigo while preserving residual hearing in the majority of cases. This positions TSCP as a viable option for managing the debilitating symptoms of Meniere's disease.

As Meniere's disease can lead to significant impairment in quality of life due to its unpredictable vertigo episodes, these findings are particularly relevant for healthcare providers and patients seeking effective treatment options. Continued research and awareness of TSCP's benefits and risks will be essential in guiding treatment decisions for those affected by this challenging condition.
